Doctor Megan MacLaggan
Megan MacLaggan is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist, and clinical Western & TCM Herbalist. She is also a medicine maker, auricular acupuncture trainer and TCM advisor. Her practice draws from both Eastern and Western herbal traditions, with advanced training in individualized herbal care. One of her favorite parts of being an herbalist is finding creative ways to rekindle the tradition of weaving herbs into life's everyday needs and pleasures, through food, teas, tonics, oils and skincare.
A core part of Megan's practice is teaching TCM principles in language that's accessible and part of daily life. Megan recently closed her Mexico City clinic and moved her practice fully online, so she can serve patients around the world while she travels to study and document traditional medicines across different regions. Her focus is on traditional medicine preservation and ethnobotanical storytelling. China is her first stop on this journey, and she is grateful to be welcomed so warmly here in beautiful Shanghai.
Megan is a lifelong student, dedicated to understanding the medicine's many layers so she can best share what it has to offer without compromising it. Her resident offerings at Silver Root include:
Acupuncture (75 min): The session starts with a health history intake, tongue reading, and pulse reading, which shape the practitioner’s treatment plan. From there, needles go in at the indicated points and you will rest with them for about 30 minutes while the treatment does its work. If you are nervous about needles, your practitioner can talk through it to make sure you feel comfortable. Follow-up sessions cover how the last treatment went, any changes since then, a new tongue and pulse check, and the acupuncture treatment itself.
Full TCM Consultation (75 min): This includes everything in a standard acupuncture session, plus a custom herbal formula built around the client’s pattern (cost of herbs not included). If everything the client needs is in stock at Silver Root, your practitioner will prepare it that day. If not, your practitioner will send you to one of the pharmacies Silver Root works with, prescription ready to fill.
Cosmetic Acupuncture (75 min): Radiance starts with addressing the underlying patterns of imbalance in the body. Your practitioner will work points on the face to stimulate collagen production and move qi, blood, and lymph, so the client looks and feels their best. This session includes the same full health history intake, tongue and pulse reading, and needle placement based on the client’s pattern and constitution. Follow-ups cover how the last treatment went, any updates, a tongue and pulse check, and the treatment itself.
Mini Herbal Consultation (30 min): This includes a tongue and pulse reading and a conversation about how you’re doing. From there, your practitioner will put together an in-house blend or point the client to a patent formula available at one of Silver Root’s trusted pharmacies. This session also includes a short ear acupuncture treatment for full-body calm and nervous system support.
